What Is Document Imaging?

Document imaging allows for the retrieval of paper documents at your desktop computer. Paper document are replicated into a digital copy via a document scanner and stored on a computer or storage media along with indexes that identify the unique document. These electronic documents can then be retrieved straight to your desktop computer though document retrieval software.

Document imaging’s growth is due to the amount of business information that resides on paper. In a study by Coopers and Lybrand, it is estimated that 90% of corporate memory exists on paper. Of all the documents that get handled each day 90% are merely shuffled and the average document is copied 19 times. Companies spend $20 to file a document, $120 in labour to find a misfiled document, and $220 in labour to reproduce the document.

Document imaging solves these problems and makes significant improvement within organizations with little organizational change. Organizations immediately begin to benefit from the implementation of a document imaging system by cutting costs and increasing productivity.
